The short version
Every marketplace prices its cut differently, and the differences are bigger than most sellers assume. For a typical sale in 2026:
- eBay — 13.6% final value fee on the total (item + buyer-paid shipping + tax) plus a per-order fee of $0.30 (orders $10 or under) or $0.40 (over $10)
- Poshmark — flat $2.95 under $15; 20% commission at $15 and up
- Mercari — 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, no separate processing fee
- Depop — no selling fee for US sellers; you only pay payment processing of 3.3% + $0.45
Every rate above was read from the marketplace's official fee page, and our net payout calculator uses the same numbers — enter your own price and see all four side by side.
eBay: the fee follows the whole order
eBay's 13.6% most-categories rate applies to more than the item price — it includes buyer-paid shipping and even the sales tax collected at checkout. Some categories differ: Books, Movies and Music run 15.3%, women's handbags 15%, and athletic shoes over $150 get a reduced 8% with no per-order fee. If you run an eBay Store subscription, the rate drops by roughly a point.
The per-order fee is easy to forget on cheap items: on an $8 sale, $0.30 is nearly 4% on its own.
Poshmark: brutal under $15, predictable above
Poshmark keeps it simple: $2.95 flat below $15, 20% at $15 and up. The flat fee makes low-price listings expensive to sell — on a $10 sale you keep $7.05, an effective 29.5% rate. At $50 you keep a clean $40. Buyer-paid shipping goes to Poshmark's prepaid label, never to you, so it neither helps nor hurts your payout.
Mercari: the fee reaches the shipping
Since January 2025 Mercari charges sellers a flat 10% — but the base is the item price *plus buyer-paid shipping*, even though that shipping money goes to Mercari's label, not to you. A $45 item with a $20.32 buyer-paid label means the 10% applies to $65.32: you pay $6.53, not $4.50. There is no separate payment-processing fee anymore.
Depop: zero commission, small processing fee
Depop removed its 10% selling fee for US sellers back in 2023 — many fee guides still get this wrong. What remains is payment processing at 3.3% + $0.45 on the item plus shipping and taxes. That makes Depop the cheapest of the four at almost every price point. Optional boosted listings add 12%, but only on sales the boost produces.
A worked example: the same $45 item on all four
Say you sell an item for $45 where the buyer pays $8 shipping and your label costs you $8:
- Depop — fees $1.75, you net $42.80 (after your label)
- eBay — fees $7.61, you net $37.39
- Mercari — fees $5.30, you net $31.70 (buyer's shipping money goes to the label, not you)
- Poshmark — fees $9.00, you net $28.00
A $14.80 spread on one identical item. That's the whole argument for cross-listing: the same unit earns differently depending on where it sells, and listing everywhere lets the best marketplace win. Run your own numbers in the free calculator.
FAQ
Which marketplace has the lowest seller fees in 2026?
For US sellers, Depop — there's no selling commission, only a 3.3% + $0.45 payment-processing fee. Poshmark's 20% is the highest for items over $15.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. eBay's final value fee applies to the total amount of the sale, which includes buyer-paid shipping and the sales tax collected at checkout, plus a $0.30–$0.40 per-order fee.
Did Mercari remove its selling fee?
No — the opposite. Since January 6, 2025 Mercari charges sellers 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, and it removed the separate payment-processing fee. The zero-fee period sellers remember was earlier in 2024.
Where do these numbers come from?
Each rate was read directly from the marketplace's official fee page (eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, and Depop help centers), and the calculator shows the date each was last verified with a link to the source.
